A&E Dispatch: Death Cab cruises toward Deck the Hall Ball

The lineup for the 2008 Deck the Hall Ball was announced today, and it’s good. The event is local “alternative” rock radio station 107.7 The End’s annual holiday concert. In order of quality of music, the performing acts are: Death Cab for Cutie, The Killers, Aqueduct, Cold War Kids and Shiny Toy Guns.

Death Cab for Cutie can tack Deck the Hall Ball onto its list of achievements this year, which includes opening for Neil Young, headlining Bumbershoot and releasing the (almost) gold-selling “Narrow Stairs” album, which has one of the band’s best songs on it (”No Sunlight”). The “indie rock” band — a tag which now means “sounds like the members read books for pleasure” — is local and used to release albums on independent Seattle label Barsuk Records; the label currently represents the other local band at Deck the Hall Ball, warm-hearted synth-pop act Aqueduct.

The Killers’ Wikipedia page says they’re “post-punk,” which is false, and Cold War Kids’ claims “indie rock.” Both have good songs, but The Killers has a great live show and is sexier. Also playing is Shiny Toy Guns, a slick Los Angeles band that makes electronic-tinged rock that comes off novel and substantial, but isn’t.
